Wishing the Mustangs the best of luck, always!!!
The Memorial Paddle Out is currently scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 8, 2023.
Location: The beach at the end of Palm Lane behind the Beachside Hotel and Suites.
What to bring: surfboards, chairs, towels, and prayers.
A memorial paddle-out is a non-denominational ceremonial remembrance, at the ocean, to those who have passed away. Friends and family gather on the beach with surfboards, flowers, and sometimes the ashes of the deceased. When we gather, the names of our departed classmates can be added to the Mustang Memorial Surfboard.
Next, fellow classmate Pastor Hugh Brockington, will lead a prayer to our fallen Mustangs. After the prayer, friends and family will briefly say words of remembrance, on the beach, to those who have passed. If the wave and wind conditions are too rough, we will stay on the beach and continue the ceremony. If the wave and wind conditions are calm enough, we will paddle out on surfboards, kayaks, etc. with flowers and possibly ashes of a loved one.
The ceremony continues beyond the breakers by forming a circle with everyone holding hands while a memorial declaration is given. This is also a moment of introspective reflection, compassion, solidarity, camaraderie, mourning, and self-analysis.
Next, ashes are set free in the water and everyone throws flowers and leis into the circle with hoots and cheers, and splashes water up to the heavens. For those who wish stay on the beach, this will also be a moment of introspective reflection, compassion, solidarity, camaraderie, mourning, and self-analysis.
Thank you Charlie Paxton for coordinating the Memorial Paddle Out.
